SHAQ vs KOBE PT 2
Despite being one of the popular players in the league Kobe still couldn’t get into the starting line-up. His role would be more defined than his rookie season. West and Harris decided to use Bryant as the sixth man. The move paid off immediately and he became the spark the Lakers needed. Playing 20-30 minutes a game he averaged nearly 18 points a game his second year. The Lakers reeled off 11 straight wins to start the season. Even with O’Neal going down with an injury the Lakers would continue to dominate. Van Exel would continue to step up with Jones and Campbell contributing, as were supporting players Robert Horry, Rick Fox and Derek Fisher. O’Neal would average 28.3 points and 11.4 rebounds per game. He also led the league with a 58.4 field goal percentage, which would be the first of five straight seasons he would do so.
With the Lakers battling the Seattle Supersonics for first in the Pacific Division, the fans voted Bryant into the starting line up of the All Star Game (youngest All Star in NBA history). The NBA jumped the gun in promoting the game as Jordan vs Kobe, it was like all those crazy Nike commercials two years ago with Kobe and Lebron but then the Cavaliers got knocked out by the Magic. Kobe started getting more attention but for the wrong reasons. Keep in mind that he is still only 19 years old. This would be the beginning of the Kobe doesn’t share the ball enough arguments. His teammates on the West complained that he didn`t pass the ball enough (when was the last time you heard someone not pass the ball enough in any all star game?) Then to make matters worse he decided to diss Karl Malone. West coach George Karl wasn’t impressed and benched him for the final quarter. Even Jordan took him to the side during the year to talk about it.
Then Bryant drew the ire of his own coach in LA. And the message was the same as before “PASS THE BALL!!’ Everybody knew that Kobe was going to be a star but he wasn’t on that level yet. Showing flashes of greatness and being great is two different things. He was still raw to the game and didn’t know how to play within Harris’ system. This would cost him playing time which made him understand that he would have to change his game to benefit the team more. Most kids that age would have a million reasons to give up and not handle that type of pressure but not Kobe. It happened slowly but Harris started getting through to the future NBA superstar. He became a better all around player and started making small contributions on the defensive end.
By the time the NBA playoffs rolled around the Lakers were the second seed in the West. They dismantled an impressive Portland squad in the first round. Then lost their first game against Seattle before winning four straight to wrap up the series. Kobe wasn’t really playing much because of a bad bout with the flu. Shaq on the other hand was destroying everything in sight. I remember watching the playoffs and feeling bad for opposing centers in the NBA. It just seemed unfair that a guy that weighed over three-hundred pounds could move and jump like that. He never got tired and just kept punishing players in the paint like a bully in the school yard. But the Lakers were still missing a piece to the puzzle. The Jazz would sweep them in the Western Conference Finals.
There was a bigger obstacle for the Lakers and the NBA the next year. A lockout forced the league to go on hiatus for the first half. No games on the court but off the court there was a lot going on. Kobe decided to record a rap album, which was never released. At first I was like alright maybe he can do it. Shaq had some good music and even managed to get on records with the late great Notorious BIG and NWA alum Ice Cube. I will never forgot the first time I heard Chris Webber on a record with Kurupt . Philadelphia 76er’s star Allen Iverson was dropping albums as well. Unfortunately, we never got to here the Black Mamba rip it on the mic. This actually turned out to be a good thing when I heard Thug Poet on youtube. Rapping wasn’t the only thing that kept him busy during the lockout. He met Vanessa Laine, a teenage dancer on the set of a music video in the same building where he was recording. They would get married in the spring of 2001, against his parents’ wishes. They felt like he was too young for marriage. This led to a brief estrangement from his parents.
When the labor dispute finally ended the NBA had to alter the length of their regular season to 50 games. With the championship up for grabs the Lakers made three big moves. First they signed Dennis Rodman to a contract. They fired Harris and replaced him with assistant coach Kurt Rambis. In march, they sent Jones and Campbell to Charlotte in exchange for Glen Rice, J.R. Ried and B.J. Armstrong. The Lakers finished the season with a 31-19 record entering the playoffs. They felt like they had a team that could go all the way with additions they made over the summer and the season. Shaq continued to dominate the NBA and Kobe became one of the NBA’s brightest young stars. Finally becoming a full time starter in the NBA Bryant flourished during the shortened season earning Third All NBA Team honours. He led the team in steals and averaged 19.9 points per game. It wasn’t just the stats that he was producing, but he was clutch in pressure situations which is what he would become more famous for later on in his career. His jumper still lacked consistence but he was getting used more in key situations. However this is when rumours started swirling around the NBA that all was not well in the locker room between Shaq and Kobe. Some were saying that the big man was jealous of his younger counterpart. The team tried to smooth things over in a team meeting but bad feelings lingered.
Despite negative rumours in the locker room the Lakers easily beat the Houston Rockets. But they earned a second round match up against the red hot San Antonio Spurs. Even though the Lakers were swept in this series fans blamed Kobe for missing two free throws late in Game 2. The Lakers would never recover and were sent packing by the eventual Champs.

SHAQ VS KOBE Pt 1
The game of baskeball has seen legendary players come through the NBA. Rewind to the 1992 NBA Draft and you have a kid named Shaquille O'Neal who is the most sought after 1st overall pick since David Robinson came out of Navy in 1987. With the potential to dominate the game for years to come. There was something different about O'Neal from other players in the NBA. He was a big kid at heart stuck in a giants body and has gone on to become one of the biggest personalties in sports history. Its not just because of his ability to dominate the game on the court but off-court . Making comercials with Pepsi for the Big Slam, appearing on SNL and being good at it (remember that part on the show when Tracy Morgan tries to spank Shaq but he looks like hes getting crushed by Shaq's weight?), doing WCW promos with Hulk Hogan and Jimmy Hart. It always seemed like Orlando wasn't big enough for the Man Of Steel. Starring in movies like Blue Chips and Kazaam. After winning 1993 Rookie of the Year honours and then taking the Magic to the Finals in 1995 (swept by Houston). Problems began to surface between O'Neal and then Magic head coach Brian Hill over his role on the team. Later he said the team just didn't respect (Hill) . Shaq and his american teammates were training in Orlando for the Olympic Games in Atlanta, when the Orlando Sentinal started making polls for fans to vote on regarding O'Neal's status in Orlando. Publishing whether the magic should fire Brian Hill if thats one of his conditions of returning (82% answered "no"). Then "Is Shaq worth $115 million?" in reference the Magic's offer. 91.3% of the response was another "no". His teammate rode him hard over that poll. Later he was deemed a bad role model because he had a child with his long time girlfriend without any immediate plans for marraige. Compared his private life in Orlando to "feeling like a big fish in a dried-up pond".
In Philly, Kobe "Bean" Bryant was busy announcing he was taking his talents to the NBA straight out of High School. After watching Kevin Garnett (classic Sports Illustrated cover!) do it the year before Kobe felt like he was ready for the NBA. He was drafted 13th overall by the Charlotte Hornets at the 1996 NBA Draft. Then was traded to the Los Angelas Lakers the same day in exchange for Vlade Divac. If you want to know how great of a GM Jerry West is then listen to the moves he made. First he drafted Derek Fisher from Arkansas-Little Rock in the first round with the 24th pick. Then the Lakers annouced the trade for Bryant in exchange for Divac whose contract was the only thing preventing the Lakers from signing Shaq.
Then comes the first day of the Olympics in Atlanta, its announced that the LA Lakers have signed O'Neal to a seven year, $121 million dollar contract. One of the biggest signings in the history of the NBA. O'Neal going to the West meant that the entire leagues power shifted to the West (one exception was the the Chicago Bulls). Every critic felt like the Lakers were going to win a championship with Shaq leading the way but didn't know how long it would take.
Luckily for Bryant, he wasn't thrusted into the spotlight right away instead he earned his playing time. NBA veteran Nick Van Exel was there to help carry the load with Eddie Jones providing scoring. The year started with Bryant on the sideline because of an injury at a pick up game at Venice Beach. He fractured his wrist and missed training camp and five weeks of the regular season.
The Lakers decided to bring Bryant along slowly but when the team was riddled with injuries in January it forced Dell Harris to put Kobe in the starting line up. Becomming the youngest starter in NBA history. His first year is more remembered for his All Star Weekend performance. He scored 31 points setting a record for points in the Rookie/Sophmore Game walking away with MVP honours . Then he took over the next night by winning the Nestle Crunch Slam Dunk Contest as a rookie. First Laker to ever do it.
In Shaq's first season with LA he averaged 26.2 points and 12.5 rebounds. The Lakers won 56 games but he missed 30 games with injury. The team got steamrolled by the Utah Jazz in the second round of the NBA playoffs.
Part 2 will be added tommorrow.
Favorite All Star Memories
First of all, I hate the NHL's version of it right now. Is it really this bad or is it because I'm not a kid anymore? When I was growing up I used to look forward to this game every year. Hopefully this year the Player Draft will make it entertaining. In the spirit of the All Star Game comming up in Raleigh I want to see what everyones favorite memories have been from the past.
Listening to John Garrett make his claim to fame (Damn that Gretzky if only he hadn't scored 4 goals in the third period of the 1983 All Star Game I would've been the MVP!). Its actually a pretty funny story unless your name is John Garrett.
John Garrett was involved in one of the oddest scenarios in the history of the NHL All Star Game. Replacing an injured Richard Brodeur, the Vancouver Canucks only representative at the 1983 All Star Game that year, John Garrett was voted the game's MVP. After Wayne Gretzky scored four times in the last ten minutes, a re-vote was held and Gretzky was named the All-Star Game MVP.
1993 and 2009 Montreal - In 1993 the entire weekend belonged to Washington's Al Iafrate for setting a new record of 105.2 mph. Then sixteen years later again in Montreal the Big Z breaks Iafrate's record. It's been awhile since I heard a Bruin receive a standing ovation in Montreal. Which is why I think the best fans in hockey come from Montreal. Also it seemed like Russia invaded Montreal on that weekend. Starting with Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin taking over the first ever Skills Shootout. One of the most loved Canadians Alex Kovalev (not a typo they love him in Monteal like teens like the Twilight Series) goes on to capture the MVP. Who would've thought that Kovalev would excell in a game where you don't have to try? 1996 Boston - The fans in Beantown know how to celebrate their Legends. If you don't know what I'm talking about then go back and listen to the intro that Ray Bourque gets when he comes on to the ice. Then Bourque goes on to score the winning goal with 37 seconds left. 1997 San Jose - Sharks captain Owen Nolan scores a hat trick on home ice. The best part was when he skated down the wing and pointed where he was putting the puck before scoring. Domink Hasek didn't know what to do after that. Also I noticed that there was a glowing puck when I watched these highlights. We'll save that for another blog some other day.

2003 Florida - I remember getting up off the couch when I saw Dany Heatley make future Hall Of Famer Rob Blake look like a pylon scoring his first goal of the game. Heatley would go on to score four goals in the game. And here Jeremy Roenick make fun of the gap between his teeth. Yah its pretty bad but he can't touch Bobby Clarke I was thinking to myself.
Lets not forget this is the first time the NHL would use the Shootout in an All Star game. Two years later the NHL made it a part of the Regular Season. Also the West won in a shootout and Heatley scored the only shootout goal for the East and walked away with MVP honours.
Who wins this battle?
Since the All Star Game is happening this weekend I want to know who everybody thinks is in the lead for the NHL Awards this year. Sorry for this being so long but I couldn't stop writing.
Hart Trophy - The year that will best be remembered for Sidney Crosby separating himself from any competition. I mean most of the competition,Tampa Bay star Steven Stamkos has been lighting the lamp all year. What about the Sedin Twins in Vancouver? How crazy is it that Brad Richards might be playing some of the best hockey of his career but will probably be taking a paycut at the end of the year.
To me it's Crosby's to lose that is if he has a chance. Hopefully he doesn't lose because of injury.
James Norris Trophy - I don't know how Niklas Lidstrom does it every year but everytime I think its the beginning of the end he seems to come back even stronger. Then theres Dustin Byfuglien in Atlanta, has there been a better addition to any team this year? His teammate Tobias Enstrom deserves recognition as he has taken another step in the right direction. Pittsburgh went on a huge win streak and as great as Crosby is he wasn't the only one driving the Penguins offence enter Kris Letang here. Letang is certainly turning into one of the best all around defencemena in the game.
SURPRISE! Nik Lidstrom walks away with another Norris which will eventually be renamed for him after he retires.
Vezina Trophy - Theres something about comeback stories that everyone loves. You win this award a few years ago and you struggle to get your form back the year after. Boston is so deep in net that the leash is a lot shorter than anywhere else in the NHL. But your patient and work hard to earn that spot back. It's weird to me that a goalie can be the most exciting player in hockey at times... Tim Thomas is the only goalie you can say that about since uuummmm Hasek! I was gonna start listing other goalies in this topic but whats the point. Thomas is so far ahead right now with The Bruins beating up on the competition.
Still there are other goalies that are having a great year. Henrik Lundqvist is quietly putting in another solid year tieing Thomas with seven shutouts so far this year. Remember when the Montreal Canadians traded away Halak after he knocked out Washington and Pittsburgh back to back in the playoffs. Fans booed Carey Price in the preseason and it looked like it was gonna be another interesting year for the Price Era in Montreal. Hes been there MVP this year with injuries taking over their team hes been so consistant and is finally living up to the hype that Bob Gainey brought him in with. Over on the West Coast there is Jonas Hiller throwing his weight around. When I look at that defence he plays behind all I think of is offence which is good if your not playing between the pipes for the Ducks.
Calder Memorial Trophy - The best player in San Jose isn't one of the Big 3 its a rookie named Logan Couture. To be a plus player on a team that seems to be going backwards despite the firepower they have up front or should I say had upfront is pretty impressive especially for a rookie. In Raleigh, Jeff Skinner is scoring Like Hank Moody on Californication. Just when you think hes going to disappear he finds a way to show up on the score sheet. You wanna know whats funny about the Flyers they always have the same problem. They can never find a goalie to get the them over the hump. From Roman Cechmanek, Sean burke, Robert Esche, Ray Emery, Antero Nittymakki, Jeff Hackett, John Vanbiesbruck and ofcourse Ken Wregget. That is basically why the Flyers haven't won a cup since Bobby Clarke was captain. But this year is a different story Sergei Bobrovsky the 22 year old Russian is making noise in Philly. Whether or not he can carry the weight come playoff time I'm not sure. But he would be my leading candidate for the Calder.
Lady Byng Memorial Trophy - WTF am I supposed to say about this lets say we give it to the Sedin Twins in Vancouver. Only because they deserve an award but I don't think they will get any of the major ones. Maybe the NHL should create a Wayne Gretzky Trophy for most assists so we can give it to Henrik Sedin every year.
Frank J Selke - Imagine if Vancouver didn't match the offer sheet that Bobby Clarke sent Ryan Kesler? I've been watching Kesler his entire career and I can't belive how great of a two-way player he has become. It's hard in this league to always face off against the other teams best line. Hes been doing this the past 2-3 years and is one of the best at it. Then you add scoring to go with the tenacity that he plays with every shift. Its funny how HNIC now accepts him as one of the best all around players in the game. Not because of his play but because hes not as talkative as he used to be on the ice.
Theres a few reasons why the Philadelphia Flyers are one of the teams competing for the Eastern Conference. There depth at forward is matched by no one in the entire league. Where did this Claude Giroux kid come from? I know he had a great playoffs last year but to become one of the best penalty killers in the game in one year is pretty special. You get lost when you think of which forward stands out the most from the Flyers. As long as Jeff Carter keeps swatting pucks out of mid air to score he will be high on the list. Danny Briere is an all star again and he deserves it because hes back to the consistancy that made him a star in Buffalo. The Captain Mike Richards might be another guy you would put in a discusion for the Selke. One of the best two way players in hockey right now and have you ever noticed that when philly needs to step up Richards either fights, hits or scores.
This is the year of Ryan Kesler from video game covers to finally getting credit which he deserves. And ofcourse an injured Pavol Datsyuk!
